ONLINE SURVEY
We were asked to post the information below regarding a survey for parents of adult children with Down syndrome regarding the role of social networking.
PARENTAL PERSPECTIVES ON YOUNG ADULTS WITH DOWN SYNDROME AND ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

Description: This is a study inviting parents of adult children with Down syndrome to express their opinions on the role of online social networking in their child’s everyday life.  If you are a parent whose child has Down syndrome, is older than 18 years of age, and uses online social networking sites (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter), please consider completing the online questionnaire via the surveymonkey link below.
The survey asks for information regarding your child’s general communication, your child’s use of social networking, and your personal opinions about your child’s usage of social networking.  All questions are optional, and the questionnaire should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.Risks and Benefits:  Benefits of completing this questionnaire include giving you, the parent(s), the opportunity to voice your enthusiasm and/or concerns about communication opportunities available to your child through social networking sites as well as lending insight into how these sites may be better developed to accommodate the needs of this population.
Participation:  There are no anticipated risks, no costs, and no compensation.  Your participation is completely voluntary.
Confidentiality:   All information obtained will be encrypted, availabe only to the researchers, and kept in a secure location.  All data collected will be anonymous.
Right to Withdraw:  You may refuse to participate, and you may withdraw from the study at any time without consequence.
Informed Consent:  By submitting your answers to the questionnaire, you imply your consent, which means that you have read and understand the description of the study, the potential benefits and risks that are involved, and that participation is completely voluntary. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns about this study, feel free to contact the researcher Kimberly Fiser klfiser@uark.edu or Faculty Advisor Marilyn McGehee mmcgehee@uark.edu.You may also contact the University of Arkansas Research Compliance office listed below if you have questions about your rights as a participant, or to discuss any concerns about, or problems with the research.

INTERNATIONAL EVENTS:

DO NOT FORGET OUR ANNUAL CELEBRATION:
United Nations International Day for People With Disabilities

Persons with disabilities make up an estimated 15 per cent of the world’s population. Almost one-fifth of the estimated global total of persons living with disabilities, or between 110-190 million, encounter significant difficulties.  Furthermore, a quarter of the global population is directly affected by disability, as care-givers or family members.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which is both a human rights treaty and a development tool, provides an opportunity to strengthen developmental policies related to the implementation of internationally agreed development goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), thereby contributing to the realization of a “society for all” in the twenty-first century.

SUGGESTIONS FOR POSSIBLE EVENTS:
  • Need help planning an event? Look at the following suggestions.
  • Celebrate and Help Create Awareness For Deaf People Events Visit
  • General Suggestions
1. Host a table educating people about students with learning disabilities.
2. Have sample letters and petitions for people to sign at your meeting or event regarding upcoming legislation.
3. Hold a bake sale or fundraising dinner to raise money for a disability support group, like Best Buddies.
4. Organize a skit to highlight some of the issues facing people with disabilities.
